Mrs Gemma Spooner - Melksham Oak's school counsellor
The role of school counsellor is to provide a private space where students can talk about anything that is worrying them – it may be issues in school or outside of the school environment.
Some examples of the problems that students can be helped with are low self-esteem, low self-confidence and anger management issues, self-harm, bereavement, bullying & family issues such as divorce, communication breakdowns etc.
The school counsellor works in a non-judgemental and empathic way, giving value to each individual and actively listening to their troubles.
Anything that is discussed between the school counsellor and a student remains private unless it is felt that the individual is at risk of serious harm to themselves or others.
Students are able to contact the school counsellor via email, in person, or through another member of staff.
Parents/carers can contact Gemma directly to discuss concerns about their child, or to refer a student to her. However, it is always the choice of the individual as to whether they attend counselling.
