Design & Technology

Design and technology topics stimulate students to grow in confidence as they develop practical and analytical skills. They become informed users of products, and creative innovators.

Food Technology

Food technology is taught in two well-equipped food rooms. Both rooms have a wide range of modern food processing and cooking equipment, and the industrial kitchen has an industrial blast chiller.

In food technology, students develop a knowledge and understanding of:

  • Food commodities and ingredients.
  • The links between good nutrition and health.
  • How to make informed food choices.
  • Sensory evaluation techniques.
  • The functional properties and characteristics of food.

Graphics

Graphic design enables the pupils to work in a range of materials and develop their CAD/CAM skills. We have a specialised graphics room with computers to develop CAD skills that combine with the more traditional graphics skills.

Our amazing CAD/CAM facilities use new modern technology, such as a laser cutter, 3D printer, plotter cutter, and sublimation printer. Every subject in design will use the key skills learnt in graphics, and it is a skill that can be adapted in the presentation of all school work and in future employment.

Product Design

Product design is extremely well-equipped to enable our pupils to meet the demands that cover all the different aspects of design and technology.

We have a broad selection of tools and machinery that enables pupils to work in a range of materials. There are three main workshops for those that have chosen to focus on resistant materials, and there is a fascinating modern CAD/CAM room where we are fortunate to have a laser cutter, 3D printer, plotter cutters, sublimation printers, CNC router, CNC lathe, and even a plastic recycling machine to encourage pupils to practice sustainability methods.

We have one graphics studio where pupils have access to computers. The wide variety of software installed is currently used within industry, such as Microsoft, Photoshop, Pro Desktop, Dreamworks, 2d Design, Cut Studio, and Fireworks. We are fortunate enough to have a variety of high-spec machines to assist pupils’ design proposals, such as plotter cutters, graphics tablets, and various other pieces of equipment for those that wish to focus more on graphic design.

For those that find more interest in textiles, we offer all the CAD/CAM facilities above, embroidery and embellishing equipment, sublimation printers, and heat press machines.

Resistant Materials

There are three main workshops covering the principal areas of wood, metal, plastics, and electronics. These are in addition to the CAD/CAM facilities where we are fortunate to have a laser cutter, 3D printer, plotter cutters, and sublimation printers. While the workshops are equipped according to the main material used, all workshops have a multi-media capability reflecting the nature of the modern design and technology curriculum. We also have a specialised graphics room with computers to develop CAD skills that combine with the more traditional graphics skills.

Textiles

Students of all ages work creatively and with originality with a variety of materials and techniques to produce both decorative and functional items, e.g. bags, cushions, storage items, and clothes.

Techniques include the use of a wide range of sewing machines (both manual and electronic) for construction and decorating fabric using appliqué, quilting, and printing and painting. ICT is incorporated in the designing (CAD), researching, recording, presenting, and manufacturing (CAM) stages.
