Key Stage 3 - PSHE & Citizenship


PSHE and Citizenship

Students are taught in tutor groups at KS 3 and in mixed examination groups at KS 4. A variety of learning and teaching styles are used to enable the students to learn and experience the topics studied.  In Key Stage 3 classes have one lesson a week.  In Key Stage 4 it is taught in discrete units within the Personal Development programme.

The curriculum aims to help students to become:

  • successful learners, who enjoy learning, make progress and achieve
  • confident individuals who are able to live safe, healthy and fulfilling lives
  • responsible citizens who make a positive contribution to society.

Key Stage 3

PSHE includes two strands Personal Wellbeing and Economic Wellbeing and Financial Capability.

Personal Wellbeing helps young people embrace change, feel positive about who they are and enjoy healthy, safe, responsible and fulfilled lives.  Through active learning opportunities pupils recognise and manage risk, take increasing responsibility for themselves, their choices and behaviours and make positive contributions to their families, schools and communities.

They learn to deal with challenges and accommodate diversity in all its forms.

Education for economic wellbeing and financial capability aims to equip pupils with the knowledge, skills and attributes to make the most of changing opportunities in learning and work. Through their learning and experiences inside and outside school, pupils begin to understand the nature of the world of work, the diversity and function of business, and its contribution to national prosperity. They develop as questioning and informed consumers and learn to manage their money and finances effectively.

Pupils see the relevance of what they learn in school to their future lives 

Citizenship comprises three main elements:

• Knowledge and understanding about becoming informed citizens.

• Skills of enquiry and communication.

• Skills of participation and responsible action.

By the end of Key Stage 3 most pupils can:

• Demonstrate a broad understanding of the Citizenship topics they have studied including rights and responsibilities.

• Present and develop a range of ideas and views about Citizenship topics, drawing simple conclusions and justifying personal views.

• Demonstrate responsibility in their attitude to themselves and others; negotiate, decide and take part in responsible actions both in and out of school and reflect on their participation.
