Brian Francis - Head of Modern Foreign Languages
I have been at Melksham Oak since Sept 2000 but I have not always been a teacher. When I left school, I moved to Manchester where I studied Food Technology and became a Baker at Warburton’s making Danish pastries, croissants and fruit pies. I then worked in the Theatre in Bradford, Yorkshire where I learnt German. Since being at Melksham Oak, I have been Head of German, Extended Schools Coordinator, Head of KS3 Maths and now Head of Languages.
Alex Palau - On Maternity Leave
I have worked in Melksham Oak since September 2011. I have worked as a Cover Supervisor and now I am an MFL Teacher and I really enjoy being part of the MFL Department! My journey began in Valencia (Spain) where I was born. I went to University in Spain and graduated in Translation and Interpretation and did my graduate education (PGCE). After that, I came to England and worked in Leeds as a Languages Assistant and a Spanish teacher for a year. In my spare time I love playing basketball and I play for a team in Trowbridge.
Mary Mc Tiernan
I joined MOCS in September 2014, having had the privilege of completing part of my teacher training here in 2013. I have enjoyed teaching Spanish and French with the MFL department so much since then. I am Irish and my second home has been in Bath since September 2013.
Before completing my training, I worked as a teaching assistant of Hispanic literature and language in Trinity in Dublin and then spent a year working as a TEFL teacher in beautiful Spain. Most of my free time is spent with my friends, skyping home and with my books (I love reading!).
I joined the school in June 2015 and I really love teaching here. I have been teaching languages (French, German and Spanish) in Wiltshire for 20 years.
I live with my husband, my two young sons and my two Border Terriers. I love reading, walking in the countryside and spending time with my boys (all 5 of them!)
I began teaching in 2008 and, after spending 4 years teaching a variety of subjects at a school near Swindon, joined the team here at MOCS in 2012, first in Geography and now in Maths and MFL! They do say variety is the spice of life! I love teaching at MOCS and working with all our fabulous students to make learning as rich and rewarding an experience as possible.
Outside of school my main interests are music (I play the piano and the flute), running and kayaking with my club in Chippenham. I also enjoy visiting National Trust places and practicing my photography skills, and have a little bit of an addiction to shoe shopping!
I have 14 years experience in working with many challenging and vulnerable young people. As a Youth Development Co-ordinator, I worked alongside young people with social, emotional and mental health issues, giving them the time and opportunity to express themselves, build self-esteem and feel valued within society. As a Restorative Justice Worker, I managed and led Referral Order Panel meetings with young people and their parents/carers, which involved conflict resolution, mediation and victim support. I am very passionate about Restorative Justice practices and seek to implement this approach in any conflict situation which might arise.
Outside of work, I keep myself fit as a member of a gym and by enjoying outdoor activities with my family and 3 young children. We are a busy household, creative and innovative, recognising fun and happiness as an important part of growing up and learning in our everyday lives.
