Kirstie Jones - Head of Design and Technology
I joined GWS in 1999, many years ago and was involved in the setting up of the Duke of Edinburgh scheme which is going from strength to strength. I thoroughly enjoy my job as Head of Design & technology as every day is different and there is always a new challenge. I work in a fabulous department with teachers who are passionate for this subject and always put the child at the centre of learning. We have fantastic facilities and pupils take pride in their work and love to show off what they have made. We are giving each child many opportunities to learn life skills and later could work in the design industry.
My spare time is taken up with being a taxi driver for my children’s clubs, both into rugby and music. We also like to travel and go camping in Cornwall in the summer..adventure is the key to family trips out.
Steve Phillips - Advanced Skills Teacher of Design and Technology
I have taught in Melksham since January 1999 through the great days at George Ward and the even better days at MOCS. My recent promotion from Lead Teacher to Assistant Head with responsibility for Post 16 education at MOCS brings lots of new and exciting challenges which I’m eager to get stuck into. My passion for teaching and learning is my drive to make sure that every student in my care becomes the best version of themselves they can be.
My passions outside of school mainly rotate around sport and in particular rugby. After playing for many years all over the world, I now coach adults, Colts and my son’s junior at a local club outside of Bath; this takes up a lot of my free time but I love it….my long suffering wife is not so enthusiastic. When time permits (and the rugby season is over) I love to travel with my family, the more exotic and hotter the better!
Darren Hyland - 3rd in Design and Technology
I have been working here at Melksham Oak since September 2010, after 4 years in a school in Somerset. It’s great to be able work in such a wonderful environment with all its amazing facilities and resource.
I have been teaching for 11 years and prior to this I worked in outdoor education in Cambridgeshire and Manchester. I travelled extensively for 3 years after university and worked for a year in Australia and in North America as a Ski-rep. I also visited South East Asia, South pacific Islands, New Zealand and my favourite location in the world Hawaii.
I am a keen cyclist and spend lots of my spare time Mountain biking in Wales and other parts of the UK. My most memorable cycling experience was taking the ferry to Northern Spain and cycling back through Spain and France. My other passion is my VW campervan and I enjoy spending weekends and holidays both home and abroad traveling in the camper.
I joined the staff at George Ward School in 2002. I am a member of the Design Technology Department and enjoy teaching Food Technology at KS3, GCSE, A Level. I also teach GCSE Child Development.
As a Teacher of Design and Technology, I enjoy all D&T subjects with a passion for fashion! Trained at the London College of Fashion, I am a specialist in textiles and prototype development. My favourite job ever is teaching!
I joined GWS now MOCS in 2009 as a Teacher of Design Technology. I am originally from Weymouth but moved to Wiltshire to start my teaching career. I am lucky to work with this fantastic SchooI and department. I am passionate about the subjects I teach and the students in my care. I am committed to making sure my students feel comfortable in their environment and have the tools they need to achieve. I am dyslexic and have had to overcome many obstacles throughout my education and career, so I can understand some of the challenges students face when learning and can offer support. I firmly believe that every child can achieve.
I am part time teacher of Design &Technology. I find there is never a dull moment in our department teaching the wide variety of subjects in the DT curriculum.
I also enjoy working in the fast pace of a secondary school, some days can be challenging but always different. Before i settled into teaching 10 years ago i studied Fine Art at Leeds University. I then lived and worked in the USA for 4 years and Australia for 2 years. I now enjoy spending time with my husband and 3 young children, painting, baking and visiting friends.
Will Grainger -DT Technician
My career, so far, has enabled me to acquire considerable knowledge and experience with a wide variety of materials, techniques and processes. I enjoy all aspects of making particularly where geometry or geometric structures are involved.
Despite all of this experience I am mostly used by the school kids as a cobbler to repair shoes or school bags.
