Aidan Blowers - Interim Principal
I started at Melksham Oak in Sept 2012 having taught at two previous schools, spending 12 years in my second post locally. I am so pleased that I took the plunge and made the move, as I have genuinely felt so welcomed and accepted by staff and students alike.
I believe it really is a "great school" and I am not just talking about the building and the incredible resources. It is the collective drive of all those involved in the school which is really inspiring me and I cannot wait to build on the links that are giving us such a positive reputation.
I live in Bradford on Avon with my wife, daughter and son. My two main loves are the Arts and Sport. As a drama teacher I try to keep abreast of Theatre, Film and Music. I'll try my hand at any sport but I am at my happiest on a surfboard. I drive all around the south west hunting for waves and love the way the sport keeps me relatively fit and gives me time to think as I sit out back waiting for a set to come in.
Charmian Jones – Assistant Principal - Child Protection
Jo Lawrence - Assistant Principal
As Assistant Principal at Melksham Oak I have responsibility for the Curriculum and Sixth Form. I teach science to all year groups and Biology at A level. I taught previously in Swindon before joining the Melksham Community and have enjoyed the experience so much that I have now been part of this community for over 20 years. That does mean I now have teacher colleagues who were former students and also teach the sons and daughters of former students, this is a privilege although it does sometimes remind me of my age!
Jane Furnivall – Assistant Principal - SENCO
I was appointed the Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator at Melksham Oak in September 2010. I have previously taught in Bristol, Bath, Wiltshire and the United States of America and have been involved in working with pupils with Special Educational Needs since 1991.
In my role as SENCO I am committed to providing an inclusive curriculum and appropriate high quality education to all pupils, whatever their needs and abilities. I understand that school can be challenging for some pupils and believe an important part of my role is to guide them through in the best possible way. I feel that all pupils need someone to champion their cause so that they have access to a nurturing, exhilarating and positive learning experience.
I am incredibly lucky to work with staff who are totally committed and dedicated to supporting the future generation. Each day is different and comes with its own challenges and rewards but I thoroughly love coming to school every day and consider myself very fortunate to have such a fulfilling occupation.
Steve Phillips - Assistant Principal - Head of 6th Form
I have taught in Melksham since January 1999 through the great days at George Ward and the even better days at MOCS. My recent promotion from Lead Teacher to Assistant Head with responsibility for Post 16 education at MOCS brings lots of new and exciting challenges which I’m eager to get stuck into. My passion for teaching and learning is my drive to make sure that every student in my care becomes the best version of themselves they can be.
My passions outside of school mainly rotate around sport and in particular rugby. After playing for many years all over the world, I now coach adults, Colts and my son’s junior at a local club outside of Bath; this takes up a lot of my free time but I love it….my long suffering wife is not so enthusiastic. When time permits (and the rugby season is over) I love to travel with my family, the more exotic and hotter the better!
Mark Surowiec - Assistant Principal
I love working in education because I get to use my experiences to make a difference with young people in the hope that they progress to lead rewarding, enjoyable lives, whatever they choose to do. I believe that learning is an essential activity that begins in childhood but should carry on throughout our lives - my grandmother is in her 90's and is always telling me about new things she has learnt!
I joined Melksham Oak in January 2017 having taught in three other comprehensive schools. I grew up in Bradford on Avon so Wiltshire is familiar territory, although I have spent a good deal of my life living, studying and working in cities (Manchester, Bristol and then seven years in London). I now live in Devizes and commute to work by bicycle as often as possible.
It is through learning and doing new things that we leave our “comfort zones” and feel challenged. I’m trying to learn the guitar when it is possible to grab a few minutes away from teaching, road cycling and family time with my wife and two daughters.
